The summer issue of P.O.W.E.R. Magazine features the beautiful Christie Brinkley, who is still rocking a bikini in her 60’s!  Of course, not everyone is a supermodel, but Christie certainly is a testament to the fact that the aging process does not have to be so scary. More and more women are taking her lead and defying the stigma that comes along with aging as they start new careers and businesses, embark on new wellness routines, make new lifestyle choices, and forge new relationships in their later years of life. The saying, “age is just a number” has never been so true!

If you want to age gracefully and continue to live your best life well into your golden years, you need to have the right attitude and the tools to keep your body operating in tip-top condition.  Here are some excellent anti-aging techniques you can put into practice every day to help you face the aging process with confidence.

Eat Right

Mom was right – eat your veggies! They are a great source of antioxidants which help to keep you healthy and will also keep your calorie intake at a manageable level. Just as important as what you eat is what you don’t eat. Stay away from processed meats, excess carbs, and added sugars. And definitely ditch the soda!

Exercise

Working out keeps the body from breaking down. Exercise helps to provide increased stamina, greater muscle strength, better balance, clarity in thinking and a stronger immune system. Find an exercise routine that you like and fits into your schedule and then make a commitment to yourself to stick to it.

Keep Your Brain Sharp

Never stop learning!  Just like your body, your brain needs stimulation to function at its best.  Research shows that memory can be improved by learning new things, keeping up on current events, playing games and doing crossword puzzles.  Remaining social is also vitally important and covid has wreaked havoc for many on this front. Interacting with others helps keeps your brain engaged, so if you have been lacking in the socialization department lately, take up a hobby or volunteer your time to meet other people that have your same interests.

Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep at night is very important for maintaining good health. Six-eight hours every night is the number you should be working toward. Your body and mind need that time to recoup, and you may be more susceptible to stress or disease without it. Trouble falling asleep or waking up before you are fully rested is a common problem as you age.  If you can relate to this, stay away from electronic devices an hour before bed or try drinking a calming decaffeinated tea. Reading, listening to soothing music or meditating before going to bed can also help promote better sleep.

Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking is a guaranteed way of risking your health, plus it ages your skin and the rest of your body. The harsh reality is that you are shortening your lifespan if you choose to smoke. When it comes to alcohol, small amounts here and there are completely fine, but don’t overdo it.

Concentrate on Skin Care

When you take care of your skin, you can maintain a healthy, younger look.  It is easier than ever to establish a daily skin care routine as there are so many great anti-aging gels and creams on the market now.  And, of course, no one like to hear this, but staying out of the sun is the best advice to avoid damage to the skin and skin cancers.

We all realize aging is a part of life and there is no turning back the clock.  But, you can either let Father Time get the best of you or you can fight him every step of the way. So, take advantage of these tips, put them into practice, and win the battle. Make the years ahead the best ones yet!
